About why wires and cables are twisted:

1. Copper wires of different specifications and different numbers are twisted together in a certain arrangement order and laying pitch to become a conductor with a larger diameter
This stranded large-diameter stranded conductor is softer than a single copper wire of the same diameter, and the resulting wire has good bending performance and is not easy to break during a swing test. For some wires that require flexibility (for example, Medical grade wire) is easier to meet the requirements.

Four advantages of stranded cable

  • Stranded conductors are softer than solid conductors of the same cross-sectional area
  • Stranded conductors have better bending properties
  • Stranded conductors are not easily damaged when conducting a wire swing test (wire bend test)
  • Stranded conductors can be widely used in flexible structural wires and cables

2. In terms of electrical performance, after the conductor is energized, it will heat up due to the consumption of electrical energy by the resistance. As the temperature rises, it will affect the performance and life of the insulating layer and protective layer materials.
3. In order to make the cable run efficiently, the conductor cross-section should be increased, but a single wire with a large cross-section is not easy to bend and has poor flexibility, which is very unfavorable for production, transportation, installation and laying. In terms of mechanical properties, it is also required to have flexibility and reliability, and multiple single wires are twisted together to solve the contradiction.
